Saturday May 14.
A relaxing day but rain for most of it made me feel at home. Thank heavens that we weren't cycling in it. That rain was well forecast but the forecast for the Beijing area for the next few days is rain free. All our group (but a few missing from my list) and staff met for a few hours briefing this morning - introduction of staff and their varying responsibilities, cyclists making themselves known and their expectations of this expedition into the relatively unknown. Then some housekeeping re cycling and accommodation procedures.
All seem to be of a positive frame of mind. No other Irish cyclist (till we arrive in Almaty(Kaz) in early July but quite a few came to me stating their Irish connections, not surprising with names like Donohue, Hennessy, Byrne and Costelloe and yet another had spent some time working in Galway. Another one had cycled on my Australian trip (2013) but finished up just as I joined it in Perth. We were both at the corresponding meeting in Perth, she in a farewell capacity and I being introduced to the group. Small world!
In the afternoon a few of us headed over to the Summer Palace area of town on the very clean and very efficient subway to locate a recommended Outdoor Store. Eventually found it after first straying into more Hutongs. Plenty of small shops but nothing corresponding to our quest. But items very expensive, dearer than at home. Outdoor activities don't seem that popular with people here. I spoke to the manager of the hotels restaurant tonight and he just can’t understand what we are doing - no comfort, no prize etc. Some others may well agree with him!!
Relaxing tonight (have done so every night) and excited about pushing off in the morning at 6.45 in a 7 or 8 km convoy out of the greater Beijing. Then into the hills and up by the Great Wall at Badaling. Excited....probably won't sleep at all.
One of the cyclists instructed me on setting up a VPN this morning (Betternet) and now I can check Facebook (Oh, the relief !!) and upload the blog while still in China. We stay in hotels in China but after that the bush camping begins and uploads may be confined to Rest Days (when in a hotel).
And do keep comments coming......directions are to be found at the end of the first post ’Introduction’.
All ready to go. Buailimis bothar.
